Derek Owens

Curtis Derek Owens, Principal of Owens Development Company, LLC, located in Washington DC, has been an entrepreneur for 28 years. He began his career as a full partner in his family owned businesses. The Owens family business ventures have grossed well over a billion in revenue in healthcare, cable TV, real estate, hospitality, night clubs, restaurants, and much more.

His present management team has evolved from its origins in Georgia Cafe, McRae Associates and Quaker Group. As Quaker Group, the company secured contracts to manage the operations and marketing of several hotels, including the rooms operations and catering.

In the late 90’s, Mr. Owens formed an LLC to purchase and develop a property on 8th Street, NW, Washington DC. This 16,000 square foot facility was a multi-purpose complex located just steps from Howard University Hospital. With a maximum seating of 600 and meeting capacity of over 1000, this facility was one of the largest in the DC area.

Mr. Owens concept was to organize under a single umbrella, a high end, on site catering facility; a conference, meeting and special event center; a night club; and 2 non-profit national organizations, designed to improve the quality of life for children and adults living in urban communities within the United States.

Mr. Owens naturally has close ties to the Music Industry with his mom serving as the Top Executive at Motown for over 30 years. Motown has blossomed the careers of Smokey Robinson, Tina Marie, Lionel Richie, Rick James, the Temptations, & Of course the Jackson 5 & the Legendary King of Pop Michael Jackson & many others.

Mr. Owens’s company provided for Black Entertainment Television, catered luncheons, corporate meetings and large productions. Included in the large productions was BET’s annual Walk of Fame. UCC catered this event for 8-10 years and provided catering services for guest, production crews and Honoree’s. Honoree’s included: Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Kenneth “Baby Face” Edmonds, Patti Labelle, Boyz To Men, Stevie Wonder ,Luther Vandross, Diana Ross. In additions to the above catering services, UCC also catered an historic, french service black-tie dinner for Nelson Mandela upon his release from prison; and provided high tea for Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Owens created 2K9, the first international multi ethnic, multi lifestyle night club and concert venue in Washington, DC. Mr. Owens, along with his parents purchased this 8th Street property for $700,000. Following the success of 2K9, Mr. Owens and his partner purchased another property a few years later for 7 million. The development of this property resulted in a 70 million dollar condominium project.

In the early 00’s Mr. Owens saw the potential for something different and greater than his family owned business and started his own real estate development company, Owens Development Group, formed to develop and manage property nationwide. He has established many entities under this one corporate umbrella.

Mr. Owens formed Owens Development Company, LLC (ODC) and created a joint venture partnership with First Public Trust, LLC. The partnership would launch The Grande Organization (TGO) to develop an innovative brand platform of Public-Private National and International resort / residential / sports / entertainment complexes. TGO has current and negotiated national and international projects with an estimated development cost of approximately ($ 1.5 Billion USD) and a completed value of approximately ($ 3 Billion USD). The Grande Organization’s (TGO) current Public-Private projects are with the Governments of St. Lucia, Coconut Creek-FL, and private land owners in Charleston-SC, Charlotte-NC, Beacon-NY, Preston-CT, Roatan- Honduras, Anguilla, Rome-Italy, Alicante-Spain, and Dujiangyan-China.

Mr. Owens was a television guest on The Armstrong Williams Show, “The Millionaires Club”. He was the featured Real Estate Developer Guest Host. He was the featured Real Estate Developer Guest Host .

In the late 00’s, Mr. Owens formed a utility division of the Owens Group of Companies. He partnered with a team of national and international associates to build a thriving commercial portfolio of business enterprises. Mr. Owens also has roots in D.C. sports as well. He acquired Minority Ownership in Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals professional baseball team.

Mr. Owens continues to serve as the acting chairman of Owens Group of Companies, as well as offer his recipe for success at professional development seminars across the country teaching young professionals how to make money in corporate and direct sales. Lastly, Mr. Owens also currently heads up the Family Venture Capitalist firm with investing in over 20 different industries to date.
